The Way Boating Should Be

Last Sunday my brother and I took a kayak trip up a narrow stretch of Lake Mayfield. It was one of those precious, rare trips that is absolutely perfect in every respect. The sky was covered by a layer of fluffy grey cloud through which the sun could only cast a dull, soft light. The air was barely warm and every so often a chill would blow across the lake, which was oddly refreshing. As for the lake itself, the region where we went was confined by forests and cliffs where the water passage was narrow and deep and still.

Chris, my brother, was nervous. He hasn't often been in a kayak and he was afraid the wakes from the motorboats would prove.... difficult.... to pass through. Ironically, the first wake we hit was the worst for him. I hit it first, it was fairly large, but, really now, that's what makes wakes so much fun. Anyway, I got through it with no trouble. Somehow though, Chris failed to clear it and ended up.... in it. He didn't capsize but was fairly thoroughly soaked. A fact he reminded me of throughout the rest of the trip.

Unlike Chris, my low point occurred on land. I had gotten out at a spot where a short steep climb put me on the edge of a pretty cool landslide. I climbed up a little ways and found myself brushing through nettles, which hurt and itched for quite a while after.

Now, specifically for Mrs. Jones, my most devoted and encouraging reader: You must come with me sometime. Despite the risks, I cannot think of anything more fun than going on a kayak trip with you. We can even take a thermos of tea along and have a tea party on the water.

  2. Aw, good. I hope we get to.

The wakes? You've seen wakes before. They're just swells in the water that spread out in a V shape.

Yes, well, he didn't want that. I actually didn't get very wet at all ironically... considering I would be alright with it.

  6. That's the one...

Oh dear, well, you'll have to get a picture of yourself then... although I imagine you won't look much different.

Your mother is very smart, perhaps she's had experience with you and carving knives?

You know, Alice doesn't always use a carving knife... you don't have a croquet mallet do you?

  7. Hahaha...
    I shall..
Halloween is what..oh dear a month away..
I wont have time to grow my hair out..
perhaps i shall wear a wig..

Yep, everyone in my family does..
    Even Matt..

ooh..i could borrow a croquet mallet from my brothers friend, and use it to hit people on the head with...
sweetness, good idea Patrick..I cant hit people with a plastic carving knife..it wouldnt have the same effect.
But..if i carried the knife, i could put blood on my apron and dress...
I could use my own, since it always seems to be spilling on everything else..

  8. Well, you don't need long hair. You could have it up like you did yesterday, that would work.

I can imagine. Someday, perhaps, he'll show me the scars. "Now let's see, this one is when we made apple crumb cake. This is when Joan forgot she had a knife in her hand and hit me..."

I'm already regretting that I told you.

"Sigh," it's true isn't it. Still, I can't condone you using your blood for anything other than it's natural purpose.

  9. Ooh..i could..
    This just might work...

The only person i have ever scarred is my brother..
Surprisingly enough..i didnt get in trouble

Dont regret it, it was a great idea..

I might accidently trip on the way to the peoples house, who are having the Halloween party, and then put my bleeding arm in my lap, and theen, ta da, my costume is complete..or as Sweeny Todd woyuld say...
"At last, my arm is complete again!"

  10. You should do it... it'd be the most natural look you could have... everyone will say, "that's joan, but she looks more like herself than usual... what's different?"

You've only scarred one person? That's so unbelievable it borders on amazing. So does you not getting in trouble, come to think of it.

Yup, you saying it was a great idea guarantees that I regret it.

You'd better not. That'd be too much a coincidence, even for you.

  11. "The blood all over her outfit, the gash in her arm, the knife, the hair, maybe shes being herself for Halloween..."

    Yepp..I'm terribily horrificly amazing...admit it..

    haha...oh dear..

Wel, perhaps Vinny will trip me, and then it will be a coincidence

  12. "Sigh," it'd be funny if it were any less true.

    Well, perhaps...

No, I forbid you from being with him while you're holding sharp objects, unless you're defending yourself. Even then though... try to do it with something dull and harmless to fall on... like a baseball bat.

  13. Hey..I thought it was funny...

If i had a baseball bat, he would be unconsciencious...
If i was near him at all, neither of us would get out of there unhurt..sorry....

I can bleed without sharp objects..
    I forgot to tell you..
I was eating lunch in the car, and i bit my tongue..no big deal right?
I touched my tongue with a finger, and there was blood all over my finger..sigh

  14. I know :¬\

    Poor guy

Fine, you really want me to revoke all your object rights, don't you?
"Sigh," oh Joanie.... dear oh dear oh dear.

  15. Poor guy?
This is Vinny we are talking about..

    No!
    Dont..im sorry..
I can handle other objects..just not knives and teeth and..
